Lugano-Geneva: A Step Forward for the Air Connection
A step forward toward restoring the air connection between Lugano and Geneva: the Council of States has approved a targeted exemption from the cabotage ban as part of the revision of the Federal Aviation Act.
The proposal originated from a parliamentary initiative introduced by Council of States member Fabio Regazzi and was subsequently incorporated into the revision of the Act. Together with other business and tourism associations from Italian-speaking Switzerland, LCTA supported the proposal by signing a position paper promoted by ASPASI (Association of Passengers and Airports of Italian-speaking Switzerland).
Geneva and Lugano are traditionally recognized as Switzerland’s second- and third-largest financial centers and, respectively, its first- and third-largest commodity trading hubs. For LCTA, a direct air connection would strengthen business ties and professional relationships between the two hubs, while supporting the competitiveness of the sector in Ticino.
The matter now moves to the National Council, which will be called upon to decide whether to confirm the exemption.
